The newly released U.S. News and World Report rankings features numerous Michigan colleges and universities, including two within the top-100 of all national universities.
The methodology for the national university ranking is based on a variety of factors, including graduation rates, peer assessment and graduate performance at the largest ones.
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is the highest ranked Michigan university in the country at No. 21 nationally. This is four spots higher than last year, and it ranks third among public universities behind the University of California-Berkeley and University of California-Los Angeles, which are tied at No. 15.
Princeton University ranked first nationally.
Michigan State University ranked next in the state and No. 60 nationally, representing the only other Michigan university in the top-100. This was an increase of 17 spots from the previous rankings.
Michigan Technological University was next at No. 151, followed by University of Detroit Mercy at No. 185. Wayne State University was the first outside the top-200 at No. 201, followed by Grand Valley State University at No. 236.
Central Michigan University ranked higher than any other directional public university at No. 260 nationally, with Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University outside the top-300.
Other universities on the national ranking included: Ferris State University at No. 304, Andrews University at No. 320, Oakland University at No. 332 and UM-Flint at No. 390.
U.S. News also ranked liberal arts colleges in a separate national ranking. Hillsdale College ranked No. 39, higher than any other college in the state on this list.
Kalamazoo College (No. 70) and Hope College (No. 100) were the other two Michigan colleges in the top-100.
Albion College ranked No. 126, and Aquinas College ranked No. 156 to round out Michigan representatives on this ranking.
One final U.S. News list ranked regional universities in the Midwest. Calvin University at No. 4 and Kettering University at No. 9 ranked in the top-10 in the region.
UM-Dearborn ranked No. 17 in the Midwest, while the following schools featured among the other 164 universities:
- Lawrence Technological University at No. 53
- Siena Heights University at No. 56
- Cornerstone University and Northern Michigan University tied at No. 60
- Spring Arbor University at No. 67
- Madonna University at No. 84
- Saginaw Valley State University at No. 124
- Davenport University at No. 133
- Baker College between Nos. 149-164
