China’s stock markets were mixed on Tuesday as Asia-Pacific markets saw gains despite Wall Street’s decline. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite pulled back from record highs ahead of key U.S. inflation data. Investor sentiment improved after Beijing announced plans for more proactive fiscal measures and moderately looser monetary policy next year to boost domestic consumption. The CSI 300 index in mainland China rose 0.74%, closing at 3,995.64, after trimming earlier gains. In contrast, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.2% by its final trading hour, following a near 3% surge the previous evening after Beijing’s policy announcement. China’s bond…
Tabora, Tanzania – Today the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) joined the Government of Tanzania in commemorating World Malaria Day. All men in Russia are required to do a year-long military service, or equivalent training during higher education, from the age of 18. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree setting out the routine spring conscription campaign, calling up 150,000 citizens for statutory military service, a document posted on the Kremlin’s website showed on Sunday (31 March). All men in Russia are required to do a year-long military service, or equivalent training during higher education, from the age of 18. In July Russia’s lower house of parliament voted to raise the maximum age at which men can be conscripted to 30…
BOSTON — Patriotic mobs and harbor tea-dumping returned to Boston on Saturday as the city marked the 250th anniversary of the revolutionary protest that preceded America’s independence. The commemoration of the Boston Tea Party included scheduled reenactments of the throwing of tea leaves into the city’s harbor and community meetings that preceded the defiant act on Dec. 16, 1773 — though this time, the symbolic protest was aided by spotlights and microphones. City officials were expecting thousands of visitors for the celebration. Crowds who gathered to watch the reenactment quickly joined in, shouting “Huzzah!” along with the costumed actors as…
Welcome, Australia, to the American culture wars. With passage of the US National Defense Authorization Act a mere two and a half months late, we’ve seen the first significant legislative action since the AUKUS partnership was announced more than two years ago. This is not the end; it’s the beginning. Much work remains. And Australia now has an important stake in the annual US ritual in which global stability and security are held hostage to political partisanship and whim. Don’t think you’ve seen the last of the drama. If Australians have learned anything from past efforts at closer partnership with the US, it’s…
Federal Reserve On Cusp Of What Some Thought Impossible: Defeating Inflation Without Steep Recession
WASHINGTON (AP) — It was the most painful inflation Americans had experienced since 1981, when “The Dukes of Hazzard” and “The Jeffersons” were topping the TV charts. Yet the Federal Reserve now seems on the verge of defeating it — and without the surge in unemployment and the deep recession that many economists had predicted would accompany it. Inflation has been falling more or less steadily since peaking in June of last year at 9.1%. And when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge for November is reported next week, it’s likely to show that in the past six months, annual inflation actually dipped…
Former President Donald Trump is attempting to head off any momentum former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley might gain in New Hampshire from earning the endorsement of the state’s governor by rolling out a list of new Granite State endorsements himself. And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is refusing to say whether Trump poses a threat to democracy, but he does predict the former president will be reluctant to accept the results of the Iowa caucuses next month. Meanwhile, the veepstakes are underway — even before the first Republican primary voters cast their ballots. Here’s what you missed from the campaign…
Harvard University has a difficult job ahead as it works to rebuild trust in its community and try to move on from the fallout of its president’s testimony before Congress. Unlike the head of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Harvard chief Claudine Gay was able to keep her position after international backlash when two the leaders, as well as the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), refused to say that a call for Jewish genocide would constitute harassment. Those invested in the campus culture say Harvard needs to begin an open process of remedying its policies to…
SEATTLE — San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey had just etched his name into the franchise record books once again and his team had done the same with a landmark victory in Seattle against the rival Seahawks. But the thing most on McCaffrey’s mind after setting the franchise record for rushing touchdowns in a season and his team throttling Seattle 31-13 on Thursday night was the postgame meal he got to enjoy on Lumen Field with his teammates. “That was awesome,” McCaffrey said. “It was actually really good turkey, too. I have no idea how they kept all of the dishes hot … but the turkey…
AUSTIN, Texas — A man is dead and several others were hurt following a shooting in Downtown Austin, according to police. The shooting happened along East 6th Street late Saturday night after Austin police say a man tried to get inside a bar with a gun. An employee at the bar identified the gunman to APD. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said three other people were also hurt during the shooting, but it’s…
