New York wants to introduce car-loving America’s first congestion charge, but the move faces fierce opposition — including from the city’s famous yellow taxis. The plan, similar to pricing long in place in London and Singapore, aims to improve air quality in the Big Apple by easing Manhattan’s traffic-choked streets. It also seeks to raise much-needed revenue to upgrade a creaking subway system that is used by around four million New Yorkers every day. The scheme, slated to start next year, is being challenged in court, highlighting the difficulty of levying drivers in a country where car is king. Officials…
The Chinese Ministry of Defense announced that former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger visited Beijing to meet with Chinese Defense Minister Li Changfu. The significance of the visit of Henry Kissinger, the former National Security Adviser, comes from his role in bringing the Chinese-American views closer during the seventies when he traveled secretly to Beijing in July 1971, to prepare for the establishment of Sino-American relations, and to pave the way for the historic visit of former US President Nixon to the Chinese capital in 1972. At the end of April 2023, the former US Secretary of State, Kissinger,…
In his monthly report, Jack Kleinhenz said despite challenges the nation’s overall financial health is heading in the right direction The U.S. economy is “rolling forward” as early indicators suggest the nation’s financial health through the first half was better than expected, the National Retail Federation’s chief economist said. “The first half of the year is over and the economy is still moving in the right direction,” said Jack Kleinhenz, NRF’s chief economist. “While its rhythm, tone and pattern have slowed, it has not stalled and recently revised data shows underlying strength that seems to be rolling forward.” Kleinhenz’s remarks came in…
The dollar held tight ranges on Friday as investors awaited a key U.S. jobs report and weighed the prospect of higher-for-longer Federal Reserve interest rates against the economic growth outlook. The closely watched nonfarm payrolls report is due later on Friday, where expectations are for the U.S. economy to have added 225,000 jobs in June. The release follows data on Thursday that showed private payrolls surged last month while the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased moderately last week, suggesting the labour market remained on solid ground. That sent U.S. Treasury yields spiking as bets grew…
California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday urged the Department of Justice to open criminal and civil investigations into Florida’s transportation of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and Sacramento in recent months. “It is unconscionable to use people as political props by persuading them to travel to another state based on false or deceptive representations,” Newsom said in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. “We urge the USDOJ to investigate potential violations of federal law by those involved in this scheme.” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seeking the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nomination, last year arranged to transport dozens…
