Hilton, N.Y. (WHAM) — Police said two bomb threats targeting the Hilton Central School District this week appear to be part of a series of automated overseas emails.
Friday’s email, sent from a Russian email domain, demanded the school remove “pornographic materials” from school libraries.
“We have not found any connection or local suspects to this threat,” said Captain Pat Rojas from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “If we do, we will track you down. We will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”
Wednesday’s email threat condemned a book available in the Hilton High School library entitled “This Book is Gay” — a book by and about gay individuals.
Friday’s email stated the threats had nothing to do with homosexuality.
Superintendent Casey Kosiorek said the district has been working with students in its LGBTQ+ community to make sure they feel safe.
“We are absolutely sorry that the debate around a piece of literature is making them feel that they are not included and welcome” Kosiorek said, adding people observing the controversy may be “taking advantage of division within the community.”
“I believe to the fact that people are posting things on social media that other individuals could be seeing that as a point of contention within our district and then possibly making these threats,” Kosiorek said.
The district will hold a virtual meeting Friday at 6 p.m. to answer questions from community members about the bomb threats and the district’s response.
